Clever tips to create space.

There is nothing worse than feeling cramped in your home, knowing you want to create space for your family to enjoy..

Its even more infuriating when you feel that your budget just cant stretch to a costly extension project or even a move to that new dream home.

However, with a few clever strategies and furniture choices, you can maximise the space you already have and make your home feel bigger and more spacious.

How to Maximise the Space in Your Home

  • Declutter and Organise – Before you embark on decorative changes, the first thing to do is declutter and organise your existing space. Clear out unnecessary items and find storage solutions for things you want to keep but don’t necessarily need daily access to. This will create a sense of openness and make your home feel more spacious. It will also remind you of the canvass you have to work with.

  • Choose Light Colours – When decorating, or refreshing, opt for light, neutral colours for your walls, floors and furniture. Paler colours reflect light, making a room feel brighter and more open. There are some simply stunning shades of white, grey and pale pastels available, (we simply love Farrow and Ball offerings take a look by clicking here)  which are all good choices for creating a sense of spaciousness you may not have felt previously.

  • Use Mirrors – Mirrors are a powerful tool for creating the illusion of space. Place large mirrors strategically in your home to reflect light and visually expand the room. Position them opposite windows to spread natural light around the room, or use them to create interesting focal points.  (There are some great options at the moment at Dunelm).

  • Embrace Minimalism – Incorporate minimalist design elements into your home. Choose sleek, streamlined furniture with clean lines. Gone are the days of rolling, carved , ornate wood – now you can really opt for fine, sleek lines that enhance the room, rather than take it over. For impact, just choose a few statement pieces rather than having a lot of small items, as this will help to keep the space feeling open and uncluttered.

  • Use Multi-Functional Furniture Invest in multi-functional furniture that serves more than one purpose. For example, choose a sofa with storage, a coffee table that doubles as a desk, or a bed with drawers underneath for extra storage. This will help you make the most of your space, whilst also reducing clutter.

  • Maximise Vertical Space – Don’t forget to use the vertical space in your home. Install shelves or floating wall units to display items vertically rather than horizontally, which can help free up floor space. Consider tall bookcases to draw the eye upward and create the illusion of higher ceilings.

  • Let in Natural Light – For us, this is the biggest and most impactful tip – Let natural light in your home by keeping windows unobstructed allowing the light to filter through. Natural light not only makes a space feel brighter and more inviting, but it also enhances the sense of openness.

Creating a more spacious home doesn’t always require major renovations or extensions. By implementing these simple tips and tricks, you can maximise the space you have and make your home feel bigger, brighter and more comfortable.

Transforming your home into your open, stylish space is not about minimising the limitations, but about using them to your advantage. With thoughtful planning and smart design solutions, maybe you CAN have the new kitchen or home renovation you want?
